Philosophy

Wesley Day School’s philosophy of education is grounded in the developmental principles of Arnold Gesell, which recognize that children grow and learn in predictable stages and at their own individual pace. We believe that healthy development unfolds naturally when children are supported in environments that respect their readiness, abilities, and unique patterns of growth.

Guided by Gesell’s theory, we understand that development precedes learning. Children are most successful when expectations, curriculum, and teaching practices align with their developmental stage. Our role as educators is to observe carefully, provide appropriate guidance, and create learning experiences that support each child’s physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development without rushing or pressuring growth. At Wesley Day School, we value a balanced approach that honors both structure and freedom. Classrooms are thoughtfully designed to encourage exploration, independence, and social interaction, while daily routines provide consistency and security. Learning experiences are intentionally planned but flexible, allowing children to engage at their own level and progress as they are ready.

We believe play is essential to early childhood development. Through purposeful play and hands-on experiences, children develop self-regulation, problem-solving skills, language, creativity, and social competence. Teachers serve as facilitators, modeling appropriate behavior, offering support when needed, and fostering a positive learning climate where children feel safe to explore and grow. By respecting developmental readiness and nurturing the whole child, Wesley Day School supports a strong foundation for lifelong learning, confidence, and well-being.

Excellent communication between teachers and parents is valued and encouraged at Wesley Day School. Parents receive a newsletter every month describing units being studied in their classroom. Our teachers are available to parents through email, phone, or messaging through the Brightwheel app.
